Committee Members and our Organisational Structure
Anna Shepherd - Chairperson and Jeweller
I am a fully qualified artist, designer, teacher and U.K. registered jeweller.
Originally from Aberdeen, Scotland I am now an Australian citizen living
in Perth. In Scotland my art work gained recognition and I became an established
artist and innovative jeweller. I was for fifteen years the owner and managing
director of ‘A. Shepherd Jewellery Gallery’ in Britain’s ‘Oil
Capital City’ Aberdeen. Now Western Australia’s huge land of
open space and expansive coastline inspires me. I unite art, design, jewellery
and sculpture to demonstrate a freedom of creativity, producing visual
/ tactile images of Western Australia. I am a member of the Victoria Park
Centre for the Arts Executive Management Committee and the Shop Sub Committee.
I lecture art independently and through Challenger and Swan T.A.F.E.
Rowena Skinner - Treasurer
I have been a member of VPCA since 1995 and member of the Executive Management
Committee for several years. I am currently Treasurer with responsibility
for budgeting, banking etc. and ensuring financial accountability. I also
assist with financial aspects of grant applications, strategic planning,
events, and raising funds. I am a volunteer in the office and member of
the Office subcommittee. I have been a Local Councillor with the Town
of Victoria Park since 1995 and member of several community groups dealing
with environmental and social issues. I live in Carlisle, work part-time,
love living in Victoria Park and am very committed to ensuring art is
an integral part of our community.
Irena Harper - Office/Administration Manager
My work experience is as a high school teacher, a TAFE counsellor and
as a school psychologist. The exploration of my passion for art included
a
four year university degree in contemporary art at Curtin University
with a double major in painting. My newest transformation is as an administrator
at the Art Centre with a deep interest in spirituality which is expressed
through Sahaja Yoga meditation. I bring skills in teaching, counselling,
meditation, art as well as office skills and find I am able to contribute
positively and creatively to the management of a well run office with
a
great team of co-workers.
Jill Ansell - Committee Member and Newsletter Editor
Jill has been a member of the V.P.C.A since 1999 and a member of the Executive
Management Committee at various times ever since. Her involvement has
mainly focused on the Art Award where she has assisted for many years
and she is currently the Editor of the Centre for the Arts Newsletter.
Jill is an Artist and teacher. Her work has won a number of awards including
the BankWest Open Art Award, the Victoria Park Art Award, and the Town
of Cambridge Art Award. She mainly works in acrylics. Her work can be
viewed at www.jillansell.com
John Garoza - Committee Member
A sculptor who specializes in creating bronze dragons and gargoyles. Re-locating
to Perth after a two year stint at Florida, USA. No place like home. Found
a very worth while "home" for his spare time at the Victoria
Park Centre of the Arts on the Executive Management Committee. Found out
all about committee meetings too! A member to "The $100,000 club" at
The Make-a-Wish Foundation. Winner of best exhibit 3 years running in
the pottery section of the royal Perth show. 1st in the sculpture section
too. Blue banner winner in the commercial section at the 1999 Royal show
for design and presentation. Latest "brag" is winning 1st place
the "fat" section of the Town of Bassendean art awards last
year. A hands on type of guy who is not afraid of getting his hands dirty
for a good cause.
Cathy Taylor - Inaugural member, Life member and past Co-ordinator
An Inaugural member, past Co-ordinator of the Arts Centre and committee
member of the Executive Management Committee, Cathy is currently busy
with helping to set up a waterwise garden with sculpture opportunities
and with changes to the old weatherboard house. Cathy’s own work
often involves fibre or found objects in some way. Though techniques change,
expressing her love of Western Australian natural ecosystems is always
at the core. The deepest joy life can offer is being able to stand, if
only mentally, where on the one hand the sky meets the sea in the West,
and on the other hand the sky meets a horizon of native plants in the
East. If condensing fascinating concepts into visual form results in a
durable object, Cathy believes it should be well-made, enjoyable, and
recyclable -or compostable.
Julie Everson - Committee Member
I am a New Zealander who has lived in Perth for about 13 years. I've been
a member for VPAC for many years and have been on the Executive Management
Committee (just went for the biscuits and coffee, next thing I'm on the
committee) for about 5 years. I was the fundraiser for 3 years when it
was sink or swim in the Art Centre, but now am just an active member on
the committee,so we must be doing OK! I have dabbled in all the arts from
music/ photography/ painting to the present fashion of jewelry making
bringing in a flavor all of my own with natural polished WA stones/ NZ
paua and silver wire, I am also interested in casting nature into silver.
So it looks like I love all the interesting things in the Art Centre and
am keen to do some sculpture next.
Patti Ferber - Creative Development Officer Nulsen Haven
I first became involved with VPCA through my role as Creative Development
Officer with Nulsen Haven over 7 years ago. The art centre provided an
opportunity for people who have an intellectual disability to explore
their creativity in a community setting and from the very first meeting
welcomed and respected our work and exploration. Today, after numerous
collaborative community art projects the 2 organisations have established
a healthy, reciprocal partnership. I am now based at the Art Centre 3
days a week and am privileged to be part of a group which has led the
way in community arts inclusion in this state. Toogarr Morrison- Advisory Commitee Member
Toogarr first attended University of Western Australia as a mature-age
student studying History and Psychology before changing to Visual Arts at
Curtin University and Edith Cowen University. Toogarr completed this degree
in 2003 and completed a Masters degree in 2005. He has taken a leadership
role as Aboriginal Advisor/Consultant in the many historical projects undertaken
in Western Australia. In many cases, he has pioneered the incorporation
of Aboriginal art and history in public land projects. Toogarr's ability
to empathise with various points of view has afforded him the ability to
work through difficult situations in order to see a vision become reality.
His many successful projects bear testimony to this principle. As an Advisor
to the Executive Management Committee Toogarr Morrison is a valued and supportive
member of the Art Centre team.
Jennifer Hopkin-Tyrie- Committee Member and Shop Manager.
Jennifer was born
in Scotland and in her younger years was a professional model. Jennifer
has shared her knowledge and experience on the Executive
Management Committee for four years. She is a successful jeweller and workshop
tutor, with background training and experience in shop/display and design.
As Shop Manager Jennifer's role is to view, select and display art and
craft to sell in the Art Gallery Shop. Jennifer uses her nack for seeing
the beauty
and aesthetic in ordinary and preloved objects to create dynamic objects,
jewelry and displays.
